May is National Osteoporosis Awareness Month

Bone Mass Measurements are covered by Medicare

May is National Osteoporosis Awareness Month. Osteoporosis is a preventable and treatable disease, yet approximately 10 million Americans have the disease and about 34 million more are at risk. Bone mass measurement or bone density study can aid in the early detection of osteoporosis before fractures happen, provide information to facilitate treatment to prevent future fractures, and determine the rate of bone loss.

Medicare Part B provides coverage of bone mass measurements every two years for eligible beneficiaries when all coverage criteria are met. Coverage can occur more frequently if medically necessary. The deductible and copayment/coinsurance are waived for this service.

To determine the last date a Medicare beneficiary received a preventive service, access the information through the eligibility services available through our Provider Call Center and/or our portal. Learn more about this positive preventive benefit on the CMS MLN Educational Tool,  Medicare Preventive ServicesExternal Website website.

This document was developed through the A/B Medicare Administrative Contractor (MAC) Provider Outreach & Education (POE) Collaboration Team. This joint effort ensures consistent communication and education throughout the nation on a variety of topics and will assist the provider and physician community with information necessary to submit claims appropriately and receive proper payment in a timely manner.
