Cecostomy Irrigation System Billing Guidelines

Cecostomy Tube placement is a surgical procedure to place a catheter into the cecum (start of large bowel) through the lower right side of the abdomen.  Because the tube is placed initially by the physician, the irrigation system is not reimbursable under DME.

For this product, CGS has assigned HCPCS code E1399-Miscellaneous DME, which is billable under Part B with a physician’s order.  A written comment in the 2400 loop of the electronic claim file or box 19 on the paper file stating simply “Cecostomy Irrigation Device” will allow appropriate pricing and adjudication of provider’s claims.
