CGS and Your Durable Medical Equipment

First – let's tell you a little about CGS and the role we have as a Medicare contractor. CGS is the Durable Medical Equipment Medicare Administrative Contractor (DME MAC) for Jurisdiction B. We have a contract with the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), a division of the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) to provide claims processing and customer service specifically for medical equipment suppliers located in the states of Kentucky, Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Think of our role like this – the Air Force doesn't build the jets that they fly. The Department of Defense contracts with companies like Boeing and other companies to build the jets. In the same way, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services doesn't actually process any Medicare claims. They depend on private insurance companies like CGS to process claims.

As you review this information, please be reminded that our website is designed solely for the durable medical equipment suppliers who bill claims in the 7 states which comprise Jurisdiction B. We do not provide services for Medicare beneficiaries. We cannot provide you with claims payment information nor can we provide you with information about how your claim was processed. That information is only available by calling 1.800.MEDICARE.

We can however, provide you with a little more information about the policies and regulations that determine whether you can receive a durable medical equipment item or service and whether the Medicare program will consider payment for that item or service. Since our website is designed exclusively for medical equipment a suppliers, much of the information we publish is highly technical and complex and it contains a lot of acronyms which may be confusing to you. To make it easier for you, we provide you with a link to our acronymsPDF as well as on screen definitions of many medical terms. Simply move your computer mouse over the highlighted word and the definition will pop up on your screen. If you wish to print an entire list of acronyms, click here.
