Canceling a Hospice Notice of Election or Benefit Period
When a hospice Notice of Election (NOE) (8XA) is processed, a hospice benefit period is established on the Common Working File (CWF) with a start date that corresponds with the NOE's date of admission. If an NOE is processed with an incorrect date of admission, an incorrect benefit period will display at CWF. To correct the benefit period, an 8XD type of bill (TOB) must be submitted to cancel the NOE before the corrected NOE can be submitted.
NOTE: If claims have been processed with the incorrect date of admission, you must first cancel the claims before submitting the 8XD TOB. The claims must be canceled (8X8 type of bill), one at a time, starting with the most recent claim (i.e. cancel June's claim, then May's claim, etc.). After the claims have been canceled, submit the 8XD to delete the incorrect benefit period at CWF.
It may also be necessary for you to remove your benefit period(s) from CWF to allow another hospice provider to finish their billing. If the prior hospice agency did not submit their final claims before your agency began billing, you must cancel your claim(s) in sequential order (i.e. cancel June's claim, then May's claim, etc.). In addition to canceling your claims, you may also need to submit an 8XD to remove the benefit period from CWF. Once the prior agency's claims have been submitted and are processed, you may resubmit your NOE and claims, ensuring that you follow the hospice sequential billing requirements, and the process for submitting claims due to an untimely NOE, and requesting an exception.
To cancel the NOE or the benefit period (TOB 8XD), submit the same data as was submitted on the NOE (8XA) with the exception of the following:
NOE – Once the 8XD has been processed (status/location P B9997) and the election period with the incorrect start date is deleted from CWF, submit the NOE (8XA) with the correct admission date. After the correct election period shows at CWF, resubmit the previously canceled claims in sequential order. Be sure the admission date on the resubmitted claims reflects the correct admission date. Benefit Period - Once the 8XD has been processed (status/location P B9997) and the election period is deleted from CWF, the previous agency can submit their claims. After all of the prior agency's claims are processed, you may resubmit the previously canceled NOE and any claims in sequential order.
